Rescue Diver

The PADI Rescue Diver course expands on previous courses in that it teaches you to prevent problems and manage them if they do occur. It is a demanding course, but it is rewarding and worthwhile.

The Rescue Diver course should not be confused with public safety diving. That said, the skills learned in the Rescue Diver course are beneficial to every type of diver, and is highly recommended. Rescue divers will be better divers overall, and just as importantly, better buddies.

  • Students must be at least 12 years old.
  • Advanced Open Water certification is required

Course Structure

  • Knowledge Development: You will learn more about potential problems encountered by divers, how to prevent them, and how to remedy the situation if they do occur.
  • Open Water Dives: Under instructor supervision, you will learn, practice, and complete 10 rescue exercises in open water. The course culminates with two realistic rescue scenarios in open water.

After You’re Certified

You will have developed skills useful for self rescue and the rescue of others. Rescue Diver is also a prerequisite for the professional-level Divemaster course.

Next Steps

Most divers choose to work on a variety of specialty diver ratings after completing the Rescue Diver course. For those who wish to lead, however, the Divemaster course is recommended.
